Let's Learn to Read Program

What is Reading?

Reading is a complex process in which we make meaning from symbols. This process has several components:

  • We recognize symbols.
  • We understand that the symbols represent something else.
  • We understand that one symbol [letter / word] interacts with another one.
  • We put this all together and make larger meaning from it.

There is no single or "best" way to learn to read, and generally the more methods that are available when learning to read, the more successful the reader will be.  A child's individual learning style may be related to his or her success in reading, which means that some reading approaches may be more effective than others with any particular child.

The reading strategies taught in this program follow a structured literacy approach.  These include approaches of phonics, semantic analysis, sight word knowledge, morphemic analysis, language experience, and writing, all of which teach appropriate and beneficial skills to readers.

THE CHALLENGE OF LEARNING TO READ – WHY IS IT SO HARD?

Reading is one of the most complex mental skill that exists. Given this complexity, there are many different reasons that a child may be having difficulty learning to read. Sometimes, it may be that a child is simply at a slightly different developmental rate than their peers. When they are ready to learn to read, existing school structures may not allow the time frame that a particular child needs to suit their developmental rate. Or, it may be that a child is having difficulty hearing sounds in the way that others do. This results in a lack of 'phonemic' awareness - or awareness of the different sounds in the language.

Understandably, lack of phonemic awareness presents even greater challenges as we move into reading, where the child must associate specific sounds with specific letters. Sometimes the challenge lies in making the sound - letter correspondence: that is, the idea that the buh' sound is made by the visual letter "b.' Sometimes a child may be easily distracted and being physically located with others interferes with their ability to concentrate, no matter how hard they try. And, sometimes, several of these factors combine and learning to read becomes very difficult indeed.

READING TO SUCCEED PROGRAM - OUR STRUCTURE

In our 16 week Structured Literacy program, we will target the following areas:

  • Phonology: the study of sounds in spoken words
  • Sound-symbol (orthography): how to map sounds (phonemes) to letters (graphemes)
  • Syllables: knowing the types of syllables and how to divide words into syllables
  • Morphology: the study of base words and affixes (prefixes and suffixes)
  • Syntax: understanding the grammatical order of words (like sentence structure)
  • Semantics: understanding the meaning of words and sentences

WHO IS OUR PROGRAM FOR?

  • Our program is intended for children who are either beginning to read to develop reading skills or for those students that need more reading intervention.
  • Our program can be used for children up to grade 5.
  • Students who have been diagnosed with learning disabilities
  • Students that have been diagnosed with dyslexia

WHAT IS THE STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM?

Students are tutored twice a week for 60 minutes over a period of 16 weeks. The program can be taught both in-home and online.

PROGRAM PRICE

  • $1,600
  • We offer flexible monthly payment plans

The program includes the following:

  • 32 - 1 hour sessions
  • Program Binder

Note: For students that have a diagnosis of a learning disability, this program can be claimed on your taxes.
