Reading is a complex process in which we make meaning from symbols. This process has several components:
There is no single or "best" way to learn to read, and generally the more methods that are available when learning to read, the more successful the reader will be. A child's individual learning style may be related to his or her success in reading, which means that some reading approaches may be more effective than others with any particular child.
The reading strategies taught in this program follow a structured literacy approach. These include approaches of phonics, semantic analysis, sight word knowledge, morphemic analysis, language experience, and writing, all of which teach appropriate and beneficial skills to readers.
THE CHALLENGE OF LEARNING TO READ – WHY IS IT SO HARD?
Reading is one of the most complex mental skill that exists. Given this complexity, there are many different reasons that a child may be having difficulty learning to read. Sometimes, it may be that a child is simply at a slightly different developmental rate than their peers. When they are ready to learn to read, existing school structures may not allow the time frame that a particular child needs to suit their developmental rate. Or, it may be that a child is having difficulty hearing sounds in the way that others do. This results in a lack of 'phonemic' awareness - or awareness of the different sounds in the language.
Understandably, lack of phonemic awareness presents even greater challenges as we move into reading, where the child must associate specific sounds with specific letters. Sometimes the challenge lies in making the sound - letter correspondence: that is, the idea that the buh' sound is made by the visual letter "b.' Sometimes a child may be easily distracted and being physically located with others interferes with their ability to concentrate, no matter how hard they try. And, sometimes, several of these factors combine and learning to read becomes very difficult indeed.
