4 LEARNING STYLES AND WHAT THEY MEAN

While a teacher may be more comfortable providing information through auditory means, the reality is not every student learns the same way. This can lead to a lack of confidence and feelings of inferiority for a rather smart child who isn’t being taught in a way that works for them.

This is why the VARK (Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing Preference, and Kinesthetic) learning model is so important. It covers the 4 different learning styles that pertains to how one learns and processes information.

visual learning style

Visual

Students that are visual learners typically do well in traditional classrooms. They learn best with visuals such as whiteboards, maps, graphs, pictures and handouts. These images and pictures help them to understand the content. They do best when information is presented in graphic forms.

auditory learning style

Aural/Auditory

Sound and mnemonic devices work best for students that are auditory learners. They need to listen to the content, either through lectures or group discussion, and repeat the information out loud to study effectively. They will actively engage in classroom discussions. Students that are auditory learners can be easily distracted with everything that is happening in the classroom.

reading learning style

Read & Write

Words in the written form are the easiest way for this style to learn. They’re amazing note takers, love reading and able to transform abstract ideas into cohesive essays.

Kinesthetic learning style

Physical/Kinesthetic

Learning with their hands through tactile demonstrations works best for them. Physically taking things apart and putting them back together helps this learning style to truly understand and use the information provided. Many times, students that are physical or kinesthetic learners have a difficult time learning the traditional way as the body is not making a physical connection between what they are learning.

At The Progressive Centre, we take all learning styles into account and create strategies that help students gain all the benefits of online tutoring. At a time like this, remote tutoring is the perfect way for your child to understand their learning style and develop behaviours that work for them. Book your free consultation today and let’s start learning together!
