Fun At Home Science Activities – Chemistry for Kids
Written By: Victoria, Summer Science Ambassador – Fun At Home Science Activities
This week’s science activity is all about density. Density is how much space it takes up (Volume) and how heavy it is (Mass). So when we say an object is dense it means the object is heavy and it takes up very little space like gold. If an object is not dense it is light and takes up a lot of space like cotton candy. Less dense objects will float on top of denser objects. That’s why water and oil don’t mix. The oil has a much lower density than water so it just floats on top. You will see this a bit more clearly when you do this week’s experiment.
Experiment:
For this week’s experiment we will be creating food dye rain drop explosions in a bottle with oil and water.
Purpose:
The purpose of this experiment is to explain density in an interesting and entertaining way.
Materials:
For this experiment you will need:
- Water
- Oil
- Food colouring
- Jar
- Bowl
- Fork
Instructions:
Step 1: Fill up your jar about 2/3 of the way with water

Step 2: Next fill up a bowl with oil

Step 3: Put drops of food colouring into the oil and mix it with a fork so you don’t blend the food colouring together to much

Step 4: Now slowly dump the food colouring oil mix into the jar of water

Step 5:If you wait a minute the food colouring will fall from the oil into the water and create a raindrop explosion effect

Congratulations you finished your density experiment! Follow Victoria as she completes this science activity on Youtube!
Helpful Vocabulary:
Density: A unit of measurement that compares an objects or materials volume to its mass
Volume: How much space an object takes up.
Mass: How much an object weighs.
