HAPPY INTERNATIONAL PI DAY

It’s π Day 14th March of 3.14 day!!!!!

Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi), observed on March 14th (3/14 in month/day date format) since the digits in the date (3, 1, and 4) correspond to the first three digits of π (3.14).

Pi Day was first celebrated by physicist Larry Shaw at the San Francisco Exploratorium in 1988, and it has since become a popular holiday among mathematicians, educators, and enthusiasts around the world. On Pi Day, people often celebrate by reciting digits of pi, baking and eating pies, and participating in math-related activities and competitions.

In Ontario, students start learning about pi and its properties in the Grade 7 Mathematics curriculum. Specifically, they learn how to calculate the circumference and area of circles using pi and the radius or diameter of a circle.

They also learn about the relationship between the circumference and diameter of a circle, and the approximate value of pi (3.14). The topic is then further developed in Grade 8, where students learn about the volume of cylinders and cones, which also rely on the use of pi.

What can you do at home to celebrate Pi Day?

As parents, you can support your child’s learning by engaging in conversations with them about Pi and its applications in the real world. You can also encourage them to participate in Pi Day activities and celebrate the mathematical constant with their friends and family.
