It’s around that time where students start stressing about the end of first semester. Outstanding assignments, finishing up current (and outstanding) course work and preparing for exams are some of their concerns at this time. For students in grade 9, these will be their first exams, and while others know more or less what to expect – it does not make the process less nerve-racking.
In light of students preparing for exams next week, I have prepared some tips they can use to help them get through this time.
Get organized
Keep a planner with you at all times and enter homework, projects, tests, and assignments as soon as they are assigned. Being organized will help you to remember important dates, so you can plan your study schedule.
Create a study schedule/plan
Once you are organized, look at your planner and think about what needs to be accomplished. Break it down into manageable chunks and aim to do a few hours of revision each day. Try to ensure that you are mixing up your subjects, so you don’t get bored.
Steer clear of distractions
At school, avoid sitting next to friends who might distract you and turn off your cell phone to ensure that you are paying attention to your teacher. At home, it is also important to minimize distractions. Try placing your phone in another room while you are studying. This will prevent you reaching out for it every 2 seconds.
Make sure notes are complete
Writing clear and complete notes in class will help you process the information you are learning. If you are missing information, now is the time to try and fill in the gaps. Ask your teacher for notes you may have missed or connect with your peers to see if they have the information you need.
Ask questions if you don’t understand
Raise your hand and ask questions if you don’t understand something. Now is not the time to be shy. Exams are usually worth a large chunk of your mark and it is important that you either ask your questions during class, or if you don’t feel comfortable, connect with your teacher after class.
Find a revision style that suits you
Everyone has different abilities, so it is important to determine what works for you and what doesn’t. For some students, studying and staying motivated comes easily — others may have to work a little bit harder. There is no one-size-fits-all approach when learning how to effectively study. Do you like to read your notes over? Do you spend time watching revision videos on Youtube? Or, do you schedule more time with your tutor? Remember – studying methods should be tailored to each student as every student is different.
Take breaks
It’s important to take breaks and give your brain time to rest. Take a walk, listen to music, or do something else that you enjoy. This will help you stay motivated and focused. You don’t want to burn yourself out.
Stay healthy
Get enough sleep, eat healthy food, and exercise regularly. This will help you stay focused and energized during your study sessions.
In conclusion, preparing for exams can be a daunting task, but with the right study techniques, you can make it a lot easier. Good luck to all preparing!
