Conquering Math: Live Online Small Group Math Classes for Grades 3 – 8
A small group, one focus skill, and a teacher who can actually see where your child is stuck. Four terms across the school year, each built around a single area of the Ontario Grade 1 – 8 Math curriculum.

Why Conquering Math
This isn’t tutoring. It’s a foundational program for kids working at grade level or slightly below, built to strengthen the number sense and skills that everything else in math depends on. Kids don’t need to be behind to join — they need a place where math starts to make sense again.
How It Works
Students meet once a week for 75 minutes, live online through Pencil Space, with a workbook and simple digital tools built for their age group. Groups are capped at 6 to 8 students.
What Your Child Needs
A device that can join a live online class (a basic tablet works fine) and the provided workbook. No extra software beyond what’s needed to join the Pencil Space session.

Each term maps directly to The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1–8: Mathematics (2020), differentiated by grade within the group.

This Year's Four Terms
One skill per term, running through the school year from fall to spring. Join the term that matches where your child needs the most support, or come back for all four.
First Term of the Year
Addition, Subtraction & Mental Math
This is the first term of the year and covers the skill everything else in math builds on.
Grade 3 students work with whole numbers up to 1000, using place value and base ten tools to add and subtract, and start building multiplication and division facts for 2, 5, and 10. Grade 4 students extend addition and subtraction to numbers up to 10,000, recall multiplication facts to 10×10, and use mental math strategies to multiply and divide by 10, 100, and 1000. Grade 5 students work with whole numbers up to 100,000, add and subtract decimal numbers, and build fluency with multiplication facts to 12×12.

New: Grade 7/8 Group
Multiplication, Division & Mental Math
Once addition and subtraction are solid, multiplication and division are next, and this term adds a dedicated Grade 7/8 group.
Grade 4 students multiply two- and three-digit numbers by one-digit numbers using arrays, divide with remainders expressed as fractions, and use mental math to multiply and divide by 10, 100, and 1000. Grade 5 students multiply two-digit by two-digit numbers using the area model and standard algorithms, divide three-digit numbers by two-digit numbers, and start multiplying and dividing with unit fractions, ratios, and rates. Grade 6 students multiply and divide decimal numbers, break composite numbers into prime factors, and multiply and divide whole numbers by fractions. Grade 7/8 students apply order of operations across whole numbers, decimals, fractions, and percents, work with greatest common factor, lowest common multiple, and exponents, multiply and divide fractions and decimals, and build proportional reasoning skills that carry straight into high school math.

8-Week Term
Fraction Fun
Fractions trip up more students than almost any other math topic, so this term runs eight weeks instead of six, giving the concept time to actually land.
Grade 4 students represent fractions from halves to tenths, use fair-share models to compare and order them, and connect repeated addition of unit fractions to multiplication. Grade 5 students work with equivalent fractions up to twelfths, including improper fractions and mixed numbers, add and subtract fractions with like denominators, and relate fractions, decimals, and percents. Grade 6 students extend to decimals up to thousandths, add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, and multiply and divide whole numbers by fractions. Grade 7/8 students simplify fractions, convert fluently between fractions, decimals, and percents, add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, and multiply and divide fractions by fractions, whole numbers, and mixed numbers, including percents over 100%.

Final Term
Patterning & Algebra
The last term of the year moves kids from arithmetic into algebraic thinking, the skills that set them up for success once they hit high school math.
Grade 4 students identify and extend repeating and growing patterns, use symbols as variables, and solve equations with whole numbers up to 50. Grade 5 students work with growing and shrinking patterns, translate between words, algebraic expressions, and visual representations, and solve equations up to 100. Grade 6 students identify linear growing patterns and represent them algebraically, add monomials, and solve multi-term equations. Grade 7/8 students compare linear patterns by rate and starting value, build and solve algebraic expressions and equations involving multiple terms, integers, and decimals, and use those skills to model real situations.

No. It's a small group program built to strengthen foundational skills, not one-on-one remediation. Students work alongside peers at a similar level, guided by a teacher who focuses on one curriculum area per term.
Classes run live online through Pencil Space. Families receive login details and a workbook ahead of the first session.
Groups are capped at 6 to 8 students so every child gets individual attention.
Yes. The program is designed for students working at grade level or slightly below. If you're not sure which term or grade group fits best, contact us and we can help you decide.
Each group needs a minimum number of registrations to run by its registration deadline. If a group doesn't reach that minimum, families are notified before the term starts and offered a different group or a full refund.
Yes. The four terms run back to back through the school year, each covering a different skill, so many families register for multiple terms.
